Anna Li - 3rd Instalment

This is Anna Li’s third and final instalment for her residency with us, talking about her work it has been really lovely finding out about her and how she works and the advice she has give..

Colour also plays a conceptual role in this process. Pale pinks and violets function as a veil of stereotype and projection, while deeper reds suggest vitality, blood, and inner intensity. I am interested in moments where interior and exterior spaces collapse, where flesh tones leak into architecture, and public space becomes intimate. This creates a sense of exposure that reflects the lived experience of being constantly visible in public.

Ultimately, I use my body both as an artistic object and as a prism for understanding the world. I am not interested in disability as a niche identity category, but as a way of questioning broader structures: who is allowed to appear, how labour is valued, what counts as beauty, and which bodies are permitted to occupy public, cultural, and erotic space.

Painting, for me, becomes a way to make these structures visible, allowing my audience to observe and feel these contradictions.

Anna Li guides viewers through her studio practice in this intimate video, revealing the layered processes behind her textured, colour-rich canvases. Filmed in close-up and natural light, the piece balances contemplative stillness with moments of dynamic brushwork, while Anna discusses the personal narratives and material experiments that shape her work. A concise, visually engaging portrait that invites reflection on process, memory and the tactile possibilities of paint.
