Guest - Mark Walmsley - Founder of Arts & culture network

In 2010, Mark Walmsley started a group on LinkedIn called the Arts and Culture Network . By 2020, they were over 10,000 strong so he hosted a one-hour random speed networking event so that we could all get to know each other better. It was a great success. We all got to meet several colleagues at random in a series of short meetings in small groups. We made new connections, started conversations, and discovered opportunities for collaboration.

Chief Culture Vulture Arts & Culture Network

Mark is the latest creative to answer our Q&A…

1 – What led you to, or what was your journey to this path in the creative industries? Where did it all begin?

I started percussion lessons at the age of 7 and was delighted and surprised to be offered a place at The Guildhall School of Music & Drama in 1982. Since then I have performed with some of the world’s leading orchestras, taught drums and percussion at some of England’s leading schools and more recently built a global network of over 90,000 arts and culture professionals.

2 –  Do you think the creative industry is relevant, and explain why?

Yes, the arts nourish our hearts and minds, teach us valuable lessons and critical skills, break down borders, and help us create community.

3 – If you could own one piece of artwork no matter the cost, or type, what would it be and why?

The Raft of the Medusa by Théodore Géricault. I was transfixed when I first saw this huge painting at La Louvre.

4 – What would your advice be to someone wanting to venture into the creative industries today?

Focus on your superpower and build a network around you.

5- If you could go back 10-20 years what would you tell your younger self?

Trust your instincts more, be more minimal, say no more often, and invest for rainy days.

6 – In 5 - 10 years what do you hope to have done or not done within your career?

Created a global arts and culture support foundation donating at least £10,000 per month without application forms or the burden of impact evaluation reports
